What makes Manchester so exciting is its mix of cultures and with that comes along a cuisine that encompasses the globe. If you have a taste for Indian, Spanish, African or Mexican, Armenian, Chinese or Thai food there will be a restaurant somewhere in the city to accommodate it. Here’s just a small selection of what tasty delights are not to be missed.
Not far from Piccadilly Gardens is the entrance to China Town, a flamboyant arch that leads to the Chinese supermarket and restaurants serving cheap delicious food. Check out Yang Sing Cantonese Restaurant for their roast duck speciality, dim sum and range of gourmet food and banquets. The Pacific Thai Restaurant in George Street serves high quality Thai and Chinese food by master chefs from Bangkok, and Chaophraya is a Thai restaurant at the corner of Chapel Walks and Pall Mall, it has an a-la-carte menu with a bar and said to be the best Thai food in Manchester.
Don’t miss out on visiting the famous curry mile in Rusholme, a popular district with students and residents. The whole street is lit up with bright neon lights, Indian sweet shops and supermarkets selling spices and ingredients. Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi restaurants serving authentic and traditional style Asian cuisine line the streets. The area is most popular in the evenings after the bars and clubs have closed and can stay open until the early hours of the morning.
The Northern Quarter is the bohemian district of Manchester and has some great places to eat and drink. Particularly famous for its tasty and cheap curry places, they’re not anything flash but the food is great. Opposite the old Market Gates, TNQ Restaurant is one of the city’s notable independent restaurants serving up fresh food made with local and seasonal ingredients and incorporating flavours from the Mediterranean.
Simple' is located on Tib Street, one of the city’s most historical streets, famous for its homemade cheesecake, ethically sourced meat, and fair trade teas and coffees. Sunday roasts and big breakfasts are served in its laid back atmosphere, the perfect place for eating, drinking and meeting friends.
Walrus Canteen and Bar has a distinctive blend of cocktail bar, relaxed lounge and modern Asian eatery that pulls in Manchester’s chic bar crowd. The interior design of the venue has a quirky look similar to 60’s psychedelic with coloured walls, white oriental furnishings and a canteen lounge environment. The Japanese food has a suggestion of Thai and signature dishes include Black Pepper Ribs, Oyakodon and Mussaman curry.
Whitworth Art Gallery has a great little café that uses locally-grown produce including cheeses and chicken. A taster of the menu includes organic rye bread, pasta with wild mushrooms and truffle oil and Fairtrade banana with honey and sultana bread.
Dimitris is a Greco-Mediterranean restaurant tucked away down in Deansgate, a chic and trendy area of the city. They have a late bar and live music every weekend and the food here is still quite cheap. Some of the favourites on the menu include falafel, with hummus, stuffed peppers and vine leaves and Greek salad.
If your taste buds are craving something new then try out Sapporo Teppanyaki, opposite the Museum of Science & Industry in Castlefield, the chefs give an entertaining show and the authentic Teppanyaki cuisine and sushi is the best in the city.
Grado is a business venture of celebrity chef Paul Heathcote that serves traditional Spanish Tapas with a diverse mix of regional and new wave Spanish food. Lots of Spanish wine and unusual dishes make this a unique place to dine. Customers have the chance to watch the chefs as they prepare the food as the kitchen has an open design. Nearly everything served at Grado has been imported from Spain, including the crockery and furnishings.
